Ruin of Dürnstein

Set upon a rocky ledge high above the town, the impressive ruins of the castle of Dürnstein dominate the landscape for many miles around. The castle, which used to serve as the head quarter of the Kuenringers and as the prison of the famous Richard the Lionheart in 1192/1193, is connected to the town of Dürnstein by means of an impressively intact town wall. After a 20-minute walk uphill, you will be rewarded with an incredible view of the Danube Valley.
